Do you know what causes a family panic? When you take a last minute road trip for a weekend in Houston. We kind of decided to do it just earlier that week, so saying that we were unprepared is quite the understatement. All of us felt like we needed to get away so there was no disagreement there. We just haven’t done much traveling in a while so it’s not like we really knew what we were doing. If you find yourself in the same boat right now, lucky for you I’ve put together the 5 essential tips you’ll need for a fun, summer road trip!
1. Make A List
Write down everything, and I mean EVERYTHING– what you need to do before heading out, what you need to bring, and what has to be packed. I’m insanely forgetful and I almost forgot to book our hotel rooms. I really wish I were kidding, but thank goodness I made a list and checked it twice, or we would have been in for a surprise the moment we arrived.
2. Save Space
I will say that I have a tendency to over-pack. And it’s pretty bad. But we only had so much room in the back of the car so I (unfortunately) couldn’t bring my entire closet AND make up vanity. I also like to shop when we’re on our trips, so I always come home with more things– meaning the extra space was necessary. To achieve this, I brought sample-sized products and toiletries with me. No need for the family-sized bottle of lotion with the pump if you’re only going to be away for a few days! As for clothing, pre-assemble the outfits you’re going to wear. That way, you don’t bring unnecessary pairs of shoes or pants that will do nothing but take up more room in your bag.
3. Connect And Save
Do you want to know the social media addict’s worst enemy? The dreaded limited plans with a 500MB data cap. I pay an insane amount on my mobile phone plan, only to have 1000 minutes and for my data to run out in the middle of the month. When I found out that Walmart offered their own mobile plans, I was pretty surprised, mainly over the fact that I can get a better deal for $60 less than what I usually pay. Yep, that’s unlimited talk, text, and data service plan of up to 1GB 4G LTE data for $29.88 a month. If you head over to Walmart’s Electronics section, you can’t miss it!

4. Scale Down And Power Up
I’m a little embarrassed to say that we have way too many gadgets here at home. I’m also embarrassed to say that I use my phone so much that I get the “Low Battery” notification in a mere few hours after fully charging it. But here’s why you have to scale down– you’re supposed to relax and enjoy the trip. You won’t need 6 electronic devices! You can read, surf the web, and take photos on your phone. A portable charger is so easily accessible now that you won’t have to worry about running out of power.
5. Make A Schedule
If you want to make the most out of your trip, this is a must. Make sure you look up the hours of any establishments you would like to see, or restaurants you’d like to try. However, if things don’t go as planned (in our case, we overslept after our long drive), don’t freak out! You have a fully charged phone with 4G LTE data that can help you look up alternatives.
