Music has influenced everybody’s life somehow, whether it be good or bad. One of the ways I bonded with my sister and mom growing up is through music, and we still do to this day. I’m very grateful that the people in my life has influenced my taste in music in some way, and I’m even more glad that I was introduced to a wide range of styles and genres. I could listen to classical music, to british rock, to trap music (country music is out of range for me though, it was not something I grew up in so it’s a bit more hard for me to appreciate it). My absolute favorite genre would be 80’s rock/ballads AND hip-hop. It’s quite the tie, and a strange one at that. It’s safe to assume that my kid is picking up my taste in music, and I honestly couldn’t be more proud!

Skylar’s favorite artist? BRUNO MARS. He knows “Just The Way You Are” to “The Lazy Song” to “Treasure” to “24K Magic,” to which he jams along singing “24-carrot magic in the aaaaair, vegetable soul player!” He picks up on music so quickly, and will tell you if he likes a song or not. I’m also officially that mom who makes their kid listen to music they grew up in. I really want to thank my mom and sister for introducing me to Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Chicago, Earth, Wind, & Fire, and so many other iconic artists and bands. So where did the love for 80’s music come in? I was 17 and moved to the other side of the world. right before that, R&B and Pop was all I listened to. It was too painful listening to music that reminded me of back home, being uprooted and living in a country where you have NO friends whatsoever. So I started listening to something new. I started to make friends in college, friends who listened to Metallica, Elvis Costello, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Killers, and basically everything that I hadn’t listened to before. I made new memories with music that was new to me. To this day, it’s still a reminder of fresh starts and change. I listen to it as a reminder that if I was able to overcome leaving everything behind that I had at 17, that I can make it through anything.
